What to Serve with Fried Calamari
Nothing complements fried calamari better than a tasty dip! My personal favorite is a simple, yet delicious, Sweet Chili Sauce. This sweet and spicy dip enhances the flavor of calamari perfectly. Fried calamari also pairs wonderfully with other seafood dishes like Stuffed Shrimp, Shrimp Fried Rice, or a refreshing Lemon Salmon Orzo.
Ingredients You’ll Need
- Fresh or Frozen Squid: I prefer using squid that includes tentacles because they offer a delightful texture.

- Flour: All-purpose flour works perfectly for this recipe.
- Cornstarch: This ingredient helps achieve that unbeatable crunch.
- Yellow Cornmeal: Adds a touch of sweetness and texture.

Instructions
Prepare the Squid
Begin by slicing your squid into even rings. Set them aside for now.
Tenderize the Squid
Add the squid rings to a large mixing bowl. Pour in some heavy cream and sprinkle with salt to help tenderize the squid. Let this mixture rest for about 20 minutes.
Heat the Oil
Pour 3 inches of oil into a large skillet or pot. Preheat the oil until it reaches 350°F (175°C).
Prepare the Dry Batter
In another bowl, combine the cornstarch, yellow cornmeal, and all the spices. Mix well to ensure even distribution of flavors.
Coat the Squid
Take the wet squid from the cream mixture and coat each piece in the dry batter. Gently shake off any excess flour to prevent clumping.
Fry the Squid
Carefully add the coated squid into the hot oil in batches. Fry for about 5 minutes, or until they are golden brown and deliciously crispy.
