Moist Brownie Recipe

Back in 2013, I first unveiled this brownie recipe at an event where I had an abundance of chocolate to utilize for our Decorators’ Show House preview party. Volunteering for a wonderful organization that raises funds for our county hospital, I was surrounded by 30+ talented interior decorators who transformed an empty house into a stunning designer showcase. That particular year, we worked on the Historic Schnull-Rauch home just a stone’s throw from downtown Indianapolis, and we were lucky enough to host a party before the renovations began.

Guess who eagerly volunteered to bring a chocolate dessert for 75 excited guests? Yup, me! I whipped up this Fudgy Brownie Recipe, featuring a rich, glorious frosting that’s poured over the warm brownies right out of the oven. This delicious layer of frosting not only seals in the brownie’s moisture but takes the indulgence up to the next level of yumminess!

Fudgy Brownies for the Chocoholic

As I was trimming the brownies into bars for the serving platter, my friend Bill couldn’t resist sampling the edges! He nodded in delight, devouring more pieces as I worked. More than one guest proclaimed these brownies as the BEST they had ever tasted, a compliment that truly made my day.

Alongside these delightful brownies, I also served decadent Chocolate Cheesecake Brownies and indulgent Death by Chocolate Cookies. If you give this fudgy brownie recipe a try, your sweet tooth will undoubtedly be overjoyed, even if your waistline protests a little!

Tips for Making the Best Brownies

  • Start by lining your baking pan with parchment paper or non-stick foil. This handy step ensures that the brownies won’t stick and allows you to lift the cooled brownies right out of the pan for easy slicing.
  • For the best cutting techniques, refer to my recipe for Cosmic Brownies.
  • Make sure you follow the specific instructions for your recipe. Spread the batter evenly in the pan using an offset spatula for uniform results.
  • PRO-Tip: This recipe uses baking powder rather than baking soda, so be wary that they are not interchangeable. Baking powder has a shorter shelf life, so check the expiration date before you begin. You can also test its potency by adding a spoonful to a cup of hot water; fresh baking powder should bubble vigorously!
  • Bake and check your brownies at least 5 minutes before the timer is up to avoid overbaking.
  • If you want the perfect frosting, start making it while the brownies are still baking.
  • I used chocolate chips for my frosting; however, whisk vigorously to achieve that creamy texture. If you have semi-sweet chocolate bars, use those for a smoother melt, but trust me; both options taste fabulous!
  • For the cleanest slices, chill the brownies in the fridge before cutting.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Makes Brownies Fudgy?

For those of us who energize at the sight of fudgy brownies, let’s dive into the details. The primary distinction between fudgy and cakey brownies lies in the ratio of fat to flour. Fudgy brownies incorporate more fat—typically butter, and sometimes oil—compared to the flour. Conversely, cakey brownies feature more flour often with the addition of a leavening agent like baking powder.

This particular recipe balances butter and flour equally while also including heavy cream and eggs that enrich the mix with additional fat. Always look for brown sugar, as the molasses in it adds extra moisture. Finally, a secret to achieving that fudgy texture is not overbaking. Aim to check the brownies when the delightful aroma of baking fills the air, which is usually about 5 minutes before the timer is up!

Stick a toothpick in the middle, and if it comes out with just a few moist crumbs—awesome! But if there’s batter on it, they need more time. And don’t forget, a luscious layer of frosting adds extra moisture and rich flavor!

How Do You Store Brownies?

Brownies can be thoughtfully stored outside the refrigerator. Make sure to cover the pan with foil or plastic wrap to prevent them from becoming dry. They’ll stay fresh for about 3-4 days on your countertop. However, if your brownies have cream cheese frosting or ingredients that typically require refrigeration, keeping them chilled is definitely a good idea!
